Meanwhile a 65-year-old man died following a two-vehicle crash on the Tandragee Road, Poyntzpass on Wednesday.  The victim was named as John Hillis, who lived locally.  Police have appealed for information on the collision which involved a red Opel van and a silver Citroen Xantia.

In the wake of the recent serious road accidents, Sinn Fein MLA Cathal Boylan, urged drivers to take care on the roads.

Extending sympathy to the bereaved, he said:  “Once again a family has been devastated by a tragedy on our roads. I can only urge all drivers to take care, especially where road conditions are made more difficult by poor weather conditions.

“Since I have been the Sinn Féin spokesperson on Road Safety, I have been monitoring the statistics on roads North and South and while there is a downward trend, we must all endeavour to achieve the ultimate goal of no loss of life anywhere on the island of Ireland,” he added.
