Champagne on ice in Lotto store for jackpot-winning couple

Speculation is rife that a lucky couple who scooped half a million pounds on the Euromillions lottery draw may be from the south Armagh area.

The winning jackpot of €500,000 was sold in Watters shop at Annavackey, close to the border with Crossmaglen, and a popular lottery stop with locals.

The National Lottery confirmed that a young couple from County Armagh won last Tuesday’s (February 12th) draw and have already come forward to claim their winnings.

Their €6.00 Quick Pick ticket, bought in the store on Tuesday, matched the five winning numbers of the ‘Euromillions Plus’ draw.

Unlike the Euromillions jackpot where the winner must match 5 numbers and 2 lucky stars; in the Euromillions Plus the winner chooses just five winning numbers.  The draw is available for an extra €1.00 on a standard €2.00 per line Euromillions ticket.

Proprietor of Watters, Peter Finnegan, says he does not know the identity of the winners but expressed his delight in their good fortune.

“Being situated on the main road, we have a fairly wide customer base and many passing customers stop off to play the lottery here. It could be anyone from Armagh city to the border or indeed in the local border area of south Armagh.  We have no idea who the lucky winners are but wherever they are from, there’s a couple of bottles of champagne ready to be popped here if they ever feel like coming in,” he joked.

It is Peter’s large and loyal customer base from Crossmaglen and the wider south Armagh area who play the lottery in his store week in, week out, which has led to mounting speculation that the winners are indeed local.

Alas, the lucky couple may always remain anonymous for, as Peter pointed out, 90 per cent of major winners don’t identify themselves at all.

Although this is the biggest prize ever won on a lottery ticket bought in Watters shop, this is not the first significant win.  Indeed just last year a jackpot of €25,000 was won on a ticket bought there and over the last two years an impressive total of €700,000 has been scooped by lucky punters playing their lottery numbers in the border shop.
