Huge Week for Warrenpoint

May 7, 2013

Warrenpoint Town face their biggest week since their inception as they have qualified for the promotion play-off against Donegal Celtic with the first leg on Tuesday night 7-15 on their own pitch at Milltown, Warrenpoint. The second leg will take place on Friday night at Donegal Celtic Park, Belfast.

Warrenpoint completed their second season in championship One with a 2-0 away win at Limavady United which secured them runner-up place behind runaway winners Ards who were 9 points clear at the top of the table. Goals from the two Stephens, McCabe and Hughes at Limavady enabled Barry Gray’s men finish 3 points ahead of third placed Institute.

The biggest result in the club’s history to date was when they beat Cliftonville 3–1 on penalties at Solitude in the fifth round of the 2010–11 Irish Cup, the same year Warrenpoint won Championship Two. All previous experiences will be rolled into one big effort this week as they try and cause another huge upset against Celtic who are firm favourites to avoid relegation.

Hopefully, the biggest home attendance ever on Tuesday night can roar on the home team, currently brimming with confidence, to victory to take into the second leg on Friday night.
