Local florist Siobhan Hughes has notched up another terrific result, scooping a silver medal in last week’s Junior Florist of the Year category at the Chelsea Flower Show.

No stranger to the prestigious competition, having claimed a bronze medal last year in the Young Florist of the Year awards, Siobhan is thrilled to have gone one step further this year to come home with a coveted silver award.

Last Tuesday the 25 year old from Lisseraw impressed the Chelsea judges with her beautiful arrangement based on the theme of a never ending circle.

Speaking to The Examiner on her return from Chelsea, a jubilant Siobhan, who works in George Preston Flowers in Newry, explained how entrants were instructed to take inspiration from previous winners over the years.

“The prize winning Cancer Research gardens have always featured circles and water features, as well as beautiful purples and pinks, which I tried to incorporate into my arrangement.  I was so pleased with the way my design turned out and I wouldn’t change anything about it” said Siobhan, who extended her thanks to her local community for their support ahead of the competition.

Sinn Fein councillor Terry Hearty offered his congratulations to the winning florist on her outstanding performance,

“Siobhan continues to be a credit not just to herself and to George Preston Flowers, but to all of south Armagh,” said Mr Hearty.

“She’s a great ambassador for Crossmaglen and we are lucky to have such a creative talent in the area.”

Siobhan paid tribute to her colleague at George Preston, Karen Sherwin from Newry, who also enjoyed great success at Chelsea, taking home the Bronze medal in the Florist of the Year category.  Both girls are delighted to have achieved a lifetime’s dream of going to Chelsea and hope to go from strength to strength in their floristry careers under the expert eye of their boss and mentor, Bernie, from George Preston Flowers, whose help and encouragement has been instrumental in getting them both to Chelsea.
