Taste of Ulster accolade for Cross Square Hotel

The Cross Square Hotel restaurant, idyllically nestled in the centre of Crossmaglen has long been established as the perfect location for good food and drink in the area.  Now having received the prestigious accolade of a Taste of Ulster Award, the bustling eatery has gained national recognition for its delicious homemade food and superlative customer service.

The internationally renowned Taste of Ulster Guide is widely used and recommended throughout the province and strives to develop and celebrate excellence in local cuisine and hospitality all over Northern Ireland.

The Examiner caught up with Cross Square Hotel proprietor, Fiona Kieran, who was clearly delighted with the hotel’s achievement.  She paid tribute to her dedicated team and new Manager, Paul Mulholland who she credits with being instrumental in driving the hotel forward.

Fiona explained how she entered the hotel for the Taste of Ulster award on the recommendation of an impressed customer and was thrilled to hear that a visiting adjudicator had endorsed their application to proceed towards the highly sought after accolade.

“The Taste of Ulster guidelines are quite stringent in terms of its ethos of freshly prepared, locally sourced food, so, as far as possible, we include on our menus where our food is sourced and that it’s prepared fresh on the premises. Our menus feature where we get our meat, our fish, our vegetables, all the produce we use in our meals” says Fiona, who added

“We’ve been working with Southern Regional College over the last few years in relation to the up-skilling of staff.  They have gone through food service training and completed NVQs in customer service and hospitality. This year, all of our front of house staff completed the World Host training programme and we now work with a number of tour companies in Portland, Oregon, in promoting the Cross Square Hotel as the ideal location to explore the beauty of South Armagh.”

Receiving the Taste of Ulster recommendation is the icing on the cake for Fiona and her hard working staff who continue to go from strength to strength in the hospitality industry.
