Fourth brother accused of Tassagh double murder

June 4, 2013

A brother of the Smith trio, who are currently in custody charged with the double murder of Thomas O’Hare and Lisa McClatchey  seven years ago, has appeared in court also accused of the murders.

Thirty three year old Christopher Smith, was arrested in the Essex area on Wednesday 22nd May by detectives investigating the brutal murders.

The County Armagh couple were beaten with hammers and doused in petrol before being set on fire, in a vicious attack.  They were both seriously injured and died later in hospital. An hour after the attack, four badly burned men appeared at a hospital across the border in County Louth.

They were later transferred for specialist treatment in Dublin.

Two of the Smith brothers, Martin and Niall, were arrested in the Republic of Ireland and extradited to Northern Ireland in January, while their youngest brother, Stephen, was later arrested in Australia and flown back to Northern Ireland.

Christopher Smith attended a committal hearing in Armagh Crown Court last Tuesday and is expected to appear alongside his brothers when the trial starts in early November.

All four deny the charges and remain in custody.
