Newry City Triathlon Launched

July 22, 2013

Newry’s first ever City Centre Triathlon saw its launch last Thursday evening with a great show of support from local businesses, community and sporting organisations. The event was officially launched by Newry City Mayor, Mickey Ruane and was followed by a practice swim in the cool waters of Newry Canal on a glorious sunny evening.

The triathlon takes place on Sunday 1st September and will be one of a number of events organised on that date to celebrate Newry City Day.

The triathlon is being co-ordinated by Abbey Events Management in association with Newry and Mourne District Council and Newry City Centre Management along with support from The Quays and Buttercrane Shopping Centres and many other local businesses.

Event organisers have reported a massive interest in the race already with enquiries coming in from triathlon clubs in Dublin, Derry, Belfast and Wicklow amongst others.

This hugely popular sport has seen a massive growth in the Newry area in no small measure thanks to two of Ireland’s most popular triathlons being held here annually, Crooked Lake Triathlon and Top of The Mourne Triathlon.

As always there is a vast amount of local interest with the Newry Triathlon Club and Setanta Triathlon Club, Dundalk expected to enter substantial numbers of competitors.

Speaking about the event, Race Director Catherine Murphy thanked all those who are helping to make the race possible.

‘We are very grateful for the support we are receiving from local clubs, community groups and businesses, without whom the race would not be possible.

We are extremely excited about holding Newry’s first ever City Centre Triathlon. Newry Canal is a fantastic resource right at its’ heart of the city. We want to capitalise on the growth of the sport of triathlon to build on existing tourism and attract new visitors to the area. This could potentially be another key tourism event for Newry and Mourne growing our reputation as a sporting hub.’

Early registration is recommended as large numbers are expected and places are limited. The race is open to both individual competitors and Relay Teams. Registration details and further race information can be found at www.newrycitytriathlon.com and on the Newry City Triathlon facebook page.
