Fresh consultation on care homes closure plans

August 26, 2013

A fresh consultation on the proposed closure of NHS residential care homes has been announced by Health Minister, Edwin Poots.

In April care homes in the Southern, Northern and Western Trust areas were earmarked for closure, prompting an outcry from the public and families of residents angry at how the move was being handled.  Within weeks Mr Poots ordered Trusts to suspend proposed closures pending further consultation on the matter.

Cloughreagh House near Bessbrook is one such care home under threat of closure.  Having already ceased admitting long-term residents, the Trust previously said respite and day care services at the facility would not be affected.

The proposed closure of Cloughreagh had been part of a wide-ranging reform of the provision of care for the elderly across the north and although there is to be a further consultation period, it is widely believed this will just be a formality and will make no difference to the inevitable outcome.
