Pensioner robbed and assaulted in afternoon street attack

A Newry pensioner required hospital treatment for a severe shoulder injury after being assaulted and robbed in an afternoon street attack in the city.

The 82-year-old woman was set upon by a man who knocked her to the ground before stealing her handbag.

Police say the incident occurred around 2.25pm on Thursday 19th September in the John Mitchel Place area.

The elderly lady was walking along the street when she was confronted by the assailant who was wearing a scarf concealing his face.

After pushing his victim to the ground, the man grabbed her handbag and made off.  He was wearing a grey fleece tracksuit and had his hood up.

The handbag is brown leather with two hand straps and a shoulder strap.

The pensioner was taken to hospital with a serious injury to her shoulder, though it is not believed her injuries are life threatening.

Detectives investigating have appealed to anyone who was in the John Mitchel Place area or who has any information in relation to this attack, to contact them at Ardmore police station.
