Celebrating 30 Years of Business at the Carrickdale Hotel & Spa

September 23, 2013

This weekend will see the Carrickdale Hotel & Spa celebrate 30 years in business with celebrations running throughout the entire weekend.

Over the 30 years, brothers Paddy and John McParland have grown and developed the hotel into one of the finest and most renowned family-owned hotels in the local area, welcoming all its patrons to a warm and friendly experience.

During the summer of 1983, a small hotel known as The Ravensdale Park, approximately half way between Dublin and Belfast, was purchased by the two brothers. Its doors were opened that September and renamed The Carrickdale Hotel- a combination of the names of two local townlands, Carrickcarnon and Ravensdale.

1986 saw the first major expansion with the provision of twelve en-suite bedrooms.  An under-path corridor beneath the main Belfast – Dublin road was constructed to ensure patrons safely obtained access to car parking facilities on the opposite side of the road.

Lacey’s Night Club opened in 1986 and live bands entertained people from far and wide as regular as clockwork on a Saturday night. In 1988, Saturday night entertainment changed with the beginning of the infamous Saturday Night Disco.  Due to the popularity of the Saturday Night Disco, a Sunday Night disco also began in 1990.

Further developments continued throughout the late eighties and early nineties with the development of the Health and Leisure Complex in 1989. In 1997, more property was purchased to make way for the development of the fabulous landscaped gardens, an ideal location for that perfect wedding picture.

In 2001, a huge extension was carried out and 68 new bedrooms were added on to the hotel. They offer luxury accommodation with selected rooms containing lavish suites with full air conditioning, mini bars and Jacuzzi baths.

In recent years, both the Carrickdale’s function rooms, the Lacey’s and Bernish Suites, have been extensively re-furbished making them a perfect venue for weddings, dinner dances and private functions. The award- winning Serenity Spa opened in 2008 and a further extension has just recently been completed to offer the ultimate experience in relaxation.

Due to the success of the Carrickdale Hotel, its sister hotel the Canal Court Hotel in the heart of Newry was opened in March 1998.

General Manager at the hotel, Michelle Barrett says “We have seen many changes over the years and have had to adapt to the changing needs and requirements of our guests and economy as a whole.   If you don’t move with the times you lose and thankfully we have made the right decisions at the right time over the years”.

She continues “There have been challenges along the way, but the hotel has grown and grown and is still one of the busiest hotels in the area with weddings, christenings, functions and conferences on a daily basis.  The family ethos has been instilled into the staff and for that reason it is renowned for being a friendly, welcoming hotel, and this is one thing that has not changed over the years.”

“We would like to thank all our customers over the years for their support and would like to invite them all to our celebrations at the weekend.”

Don’t forget the Carrickdale birthday party on Friday 27th September 8pm and Family Fun Day on Sunday 29th from 2pm!
