Successful music group return with classes for all and free music classes into the bargain

September 23, 2013

The seasons come and go and, while certain things will change, there are some things which are immune to this cycle. The growing interest in  traditional Irish music continues to maintain here in Crossmaglen and the surrounding townlands and the work done by local Comhaltas group CCE An Bonnán Buí is, without any doubt, a positive influence on this upkeep.

Having had great success at the Armagh Fleadh in Forkhill, the group took their young musicians to the Ulster Fleadh in Dromore where they accomplished a Herculian task by winning three Ulster titles in U-12 categories. Iarla McMahon at age 9 won the much sought after Tin Whistle title dismissing 17 other competitors and securing his place in the All Ireland competitions in Derry. He was joined by young singers Pearse Larkin and Tiarnan Conway who won Ballads in English and Ballads in Irish respectively. Three firsts at this level is a fantastic and unprecedented feat for such a young group, but the success is directly linked to the quality of musicianship in the children and the quality of tutors that the branch have employed over the last two years to nurture this aspect.

With this in mind plans for the year ahead are already in place and lessons begin again on October 1st with registration for the classes taking place in St. Patrick’s Primary School on Tuesday evening from 6PM when there will be a Q&A session for parents followed by registration until 7:30PM. Classes in Tin Whistle, Fiddle, Banjo, Mandolin, Flute, Button Key Accordion, Concertina, Guitar and Traditional Ballad Singing are available. EC Music Store will also be on site at the registration to advise parents on instruments available at a price that suits their own budget.

This year, the group will introduce some exciting new features which are aimed at developing the skills and abilities of the children who attend the classes. Those who are attending a class and who have have played their instrument for over a year are invited to play with the Bonnán Buí Ghrupa Cheoil. This will be a forty five minute class from 5PM to 5:45PM. There will also be a Kindergarten Cheili Group from 5:30PM to 6PM for children from 3 to 6. There will be no charge for these classes and they are intended to increase confidence in a child’s ability to perform for themselves, among their peers and in public also.

Anyone who cannot make the registration but wishes to do so is advised to contact the group via their Facebook page or they can call or text 087-3931119.
