An elderly lady is recovering from her ordeal after her home was targeted by thieves early on Friday afternoon last.

The pensioner, aged in her 80s, was in her home on the Blayney Road, Newtownhamilton when two burglars forced their way into the property.

Luckily, a passer-by noticed the suspicious activity and immediately alerted police who arrived on the scene shortly afterwards.  He managed to detain one of the burglars until police arrived.  The second suspect was subsequently apprehended nearby.

Police said a 28-year-old man and his teenage accomplice, aged 15, were arrested shortly after the incident was reported around 4.30pm, and thanked the member of the public for his “quick thinking and brave actions”.

The elderly victim was not physically injured but left deeply shocked by the ordeal.

South Armagh Neighbourhood Inspector, Lorraine Dobson commented, “I would like to convey my thanks to the member of the public who assisted my officers this afternoon. His quick thinking and brave actions and the timely response from local officers has resulted in the apprehension of two suspects in an incident where the home of an elderly lady has been targeted.”

Police are asking anyone who was in the area at the time and who may have witnessed this incident or noticed any suspicious activity to contact them in Newtownhamilton.
