Superbites Frying High with Success

October 14, 2013

By Christine Keighery

Crossmaglen’s hugely popular fish and chip shop, Superbites, has joined the fish frying elite from across the UK, by scooping the prestigious Fish and Chip Quality Award. The renowned local takeaway is the first shop in County Armagh to hold the award, and one of only 15 shops in Northern Ireland to have achieved the accolade.

The National Federation of Fish Friers (NFFF), the trade body that represents the nation’s fish and chip shops, runs the scheme as a way of raising standards within the fish and chip trade and enhancing the profile of the industry.

The scheme rewards and promotes shops that provide good quality products and high standards of hygiene, as well as fryers who show a high level of competence.

To qualify, each shop has to go through an inspection by a NFFF Approved Assessor who assesses the shop’s presentation, hygiene, and cleanliness, staff training, equipment, frying and sales skills and, most importantly, the quality of the cooked product.

This award sets the new benchmark for quality within the industry. It will signal to the consumer that they can buy with confidence where the award is displayed, and it will encourage more outlets to raise their standards.

Each Fish and Chip Quality Award is valid for two years and retention is dependent on standards being maintained as validated by NFFF officials and appointed Assessors.

Boasting an impressive list of credentials, Superbites has also topped its success of last year when it made the top 5 fish and chip shops in Northern Ireland in the Seafish National Fish and Chip Shop awards.  Having climbed the ranks to make the top 3 this year in the prestigious awards, the unbeatable chip shop has also consistently maintained its 5 star hygiene rating bestowed by Newry and Mourne District Council’s Environmental Health Department, for the last 4 years.

Proud proprietor, Gerard McMonagle spoke to The Examiner about the restaurant’s latest Fish and Chip Quality award, and his hopes for the future.

“We’re very happy to have achieved these awards this year.  We are improving all the time and I would like to commend my staff and management team for their ongoing commitment and hard work in helping us strive to be better all the time. To be recognised as one of the top 3 fish and chip shops in Northern Ireland is a great achievement for us, and then to be the first shop in Armagh to receive the Fish and Chip Quality Award just tops it all.”

Clearly thrilled that Superbites is consistently achieving the recognition it deserves, Gerard and his team pledge to continue to maintain the highest standards his customers have come to expect and hopes to serve good food to the people of Crossmaglen for many years to come.
