Silverlining for the Bridge

October 21, 2013

M.F.C. Football Championship: Silverbridge 3-10 Dromintee 1-11

A superb last 35 minutes saw Silverbridge overturn a 24 minutes 6 points deficit into a 3-10 to 1-11 victory over Dromintee in a trilling minor final.

Silverbridge looked in big trouble when Conor Martin cut in along the end line and fisted the ball across the goal to Cathal McArdle who punched to the net. A minute later Patrick Morgan extended the lead to make it 1-6 to 0-3. But the ‘Bridge dominated the final minutes of the half into added time where they outscored Dromintee 1-4 to 2 points and only trailed by the minimum 1-8 to 1-7 when Paudie Hughes blew the short whistle.

Lively corner back Ryan Gaskin had opened the scoring but Joe Rock levelled for the Bridge. Glen McCoy and Eoghan Burns traded frees before Gaskin raided for his second point in the quarter hour. Full forward McArdle doubled the lead 4-2 before another converted Eoghan Burns free cut into the lead as Michael Daly made it 5-3 with the goal and a point following to give Dromintee, playing against the breeze, a two goal cushion.

Silverbrige got  back into the game through a well work Eoghan Burns goal laid on by Pauric Keating. Dromintee responded to the goal with a brace of points from Morgan (free) and Ryan Hughes. The last 4 points of the half went to the ‘Bridge as Keating, Eoghan Burns (free) Aodhán Quinn and Paddy Reel (free) helped reel in the Dromintee lead to the bare minimum.

With six different first half scorers it was hard to imagine that Dromintee would be restricted to just 3 second half point from Conor Martin and Glen McCoy from placed balls and their only score of the half from play the last of the game a long range effort from Patrick Morgan.

The reason for the ‘Bridge second half dominance stemmed from a non-existent half forward line springing to life in the second half and a couple of telling substitutions from their management team.

Midfielder Jarly Og Burns levelled with the opening score of the second half, the first of his 3 point contribution. The ‘Bridge spurned a goal chance but that was soon forgotten when a Paddy Reel free broke  for Aaron Duffy who invitingly with aplomb volleyed to the Dromintee net to give the eventual winner  a lead they would not relinquish.  Martin and Jarly Og swopped points 2-9 to 1.9 after 47 minutes. A short 45 between Eoghan and Jarly Og saw the youngsters notch his third point with 10 minutes left on the clock.

A Glen McCoy free left 2 goals between the teams. A sweeping ‘Bridge move put the game to bed as Jarly Og, Paddy Reel and Eoghan Burns combined to set up substitute James McKeown for a match sealing goal.

Silverbridge capture their first minor title in 9 years in fine style playing some sparkling football into the bargain. The three minor titles for 2013 rest in the parish of Upper Creggan with Silverbridge, Crossmaglen and Culloville.
