The theft of manhole covers on the Loughross Road and Annaghad Road in Crossmaglen was a mindless act that endangered many motorists who unwittingly drove across the open holes, according to local sources.

It is understood the covers were removed sometime in the last fortnight and that at least one motorist had a narrow escape, sustaining a shattered windscreen and extensive other damage to her vehicle as she drove across an open manhole.

Local residents report that the offending manholes have now been replaced and welded down.

A DRD spokesperson confirmed that two manholes had been removed within the last two weeks and advised that Roads Service replaced the missing covers within 24 hours of being alerted to the dangers.
