Championship medal for Forkhill’s Colm

October 28, 2013

Forkhill native Colm Murphy picked up a Lancashire Senior Football Championship medal as he helped John Mitchells, Liverpool overcome St Brendan’s, Manchester 0-10 to 0-8 in the final played at Old Bedians. 33-Year-Old Colm was one of a number of experienced Mitchell players that counted against a young Brendans team who were most people’s favourites for the title this year.

John Mitchells now play in the Club All Britain Competition with manager Barry Morris already looking ahead to the All-Ireland club campaign.

“Our run in the All-Ireland club in 2008 feels like a long time ago now,” said Morris. “But we still have eight or nine survivors from that squad in our current squad, which is significant because teams change so quick here and we even lost players returning to Ireland this season. First up though is a quarter final match with Bristol based St Nick’s and hopefully two more games before Barry’s dream of a return to the big stage can be realised.

If the Lancashire champions win their quarter final they will play the winners of West London based Heston and John Mitchell’s of Birmingham. The other semi-final sees Glen Rovers, Watford await the winners of the quarter final where Dunedin Connolly’s will take on Cuchullain’s, London on home soil in Edinburgh.

Colm has a bit yet to do get to an All-Ireland in Croke Park but has a senior championship medal in his pocket to start with.
