Toxic waste dumped in graveyard

November 4, 2013

More than 1000 litres of toxic sludge has been found dumped at Faughart graveyard.

The waste was discovered in four intermediate bulk containers (IBCs) on Wednesday.

Louth County Council has tasked a contractor to recover and process the four containers, a process likely to be extremely expensive.

The toxic sludge is then decanted into new IBC’s suitable for transfrontier shipping and the material is then shipped to Holland for disposal.

There have been a number of such dumpings of toxic sludge in this area over the last twelve months, this latest bringing the number of incidents dealt with by Louth County Council to 88, accounting for a total of 442 IBC’s for 2013.

For the same period in 2012 the authority dealt with 105 incidents, accounting for some 526 IBC’s.
