Social Gathering for Crossmaglen and South Armagh Chamber of Commerce and Trade

December 2, 2013

Big congratulations to the new bard of Armagh – Glassdrummond man,  Mr Martin Hearty.  With his winning poem the ‘Culchie Gangster’ Martin was crowned at the prestigious Bard of Armagh competition in the Armagh City Hotel last Friday night. Martin warded off stiff competition in good south Armagh style from seasoned bards from all over Ireland and International competitors. The South Armagh Chamber of Commerce extend congratulations Martin. To have a local winner of this international competition is a major plus for the area and we very much look forward to hearing more from our south Armagh bard!!

Chamber president Micheal McArdle had extended an invitation to All local businesses to attend a Chamber Christmas get together last Thursday evening at the Cross Square Hotel, Crossmaglen.

The South Armagh Chamber has achieved a lot in the past years with signage to Crossmaglen on the M1, the launch of the visit south website and the launch of the strategic document for the wider south Armagh area- Thursday evening turned out to be a great opportunity for all south Armagh businesses to come along, meet like minded people and discuss all aspects of chamber business and ideas.

Micheal McArdle took this opportunity to formalise his intention to step down as Chamber President at the AGM in January 2014.

The chamber members congratulate Micheal on his leadership over the past 5 years and also wish to extend their thanks to the staff and management of the Cross Square Hotel for the free use of their premises, tea ,biscuits and hospitality throughout the past year!

Christmas officially began last Friday in south Armagh with The Christmas lights switch on in Crossmaglen. It was fantastic to see such a great turn out and it was encouraging to see so many local businesses extend their opening hours and posting special offers to encourage people to shop local. This initiative proved very successful and something that chamber will encourage to continue throughout the year. The Chamber would like to back the views of politicians  and the local community in condemning the recent security alert. We certainly want to see the good work by all organisations and political representatives embraced and do not want to see acts like this blemish the progression of the positive attributes of the south Armagh area, Colm Murphy VP said on behalf of the Chamber.

On a more positive note GAA renowned Hurler DJ Carey appeared in the Cross Square Hotel to sign his recently released autobiography. It was great to see so many GAA clubs from both sides of the border turn up along with so many locals. A great night was enjoyed by all. Thanks to all concerned and it was great to see DJ get a rousing South Armagh welcome.
