Ritchie takes fight to save Newry HMRC Centre to Westminster

December 2, 2013

SDLP MP for South Down, Margaret Ritchie has tabled a Parliamentary motion at Westminster calling for the retention of the HMRC centre in Newry.

Speaking about the motion Ms Ritchie stated: “This closure of this centre would lead to the loss of over 130 jobs and would be absolutely devastating to the local economy. As well as each job loss being a personal tragedy for those involved, cutting these jobs will damage a wide range of business operating in Newry and South Down.

“This centre has developed a large degree of expertise and would be more than capable of handling non-site specific work – something the UK Treasury highlight as being important in taking this decision.

“This decision, along with scaling down operations in Derry and Enniskillen, fundamentally undermines the British Government’s claim they want to generate growth in the economy in Northern Ireland. Instead, their cuts agenda will undercut any attempt to develop our economy. I will continue to make this case in Westminster and fight for a reversal of the decision to close the centre in Newry.”
