Woman dies in ‘suspicious’ house fire

January 13, 2014

A house fire, which claimed the life of a woman in Newry at the weekend, is being treated as suspicious, police have said.

Police and the Fire Service were called to the scene at George’s Lane in the Lower Mill Street area shortly after 11.00pm on Saturday night.

After the blaze was extinguished, the body of a woman was recovered from the property.  Police say they are treating the cause of the fire as ‘suspicious’ and have appealed for anyone who was in the area at the time or who may have information to contact them at Ardmore police station.

Extending his sympathy to the victim’s family, Sinn Féin Councillor Charlie Casey, said: “This is very grim news coming from a quiet part of Newry and my thoughts are with the family of the deceased woman.  Local people have told me that they believe the lady was not local.  I urge anyone with information relating to this incident to contact the PSNI and again I offer my condolences to the family.”
