Cullyhanna alert ‘an elaborate hoax’

January 13, 2014

A suspicious device, which sparked a security alert in Cullyhanna on Wednesday, was found to be ‘an elaborate hoax’.

The object was found by police during a routine patrol on the Lisleitrim Road and army technical officers were tasked.  The road along with nearby Sheetrim Road and Lake Road were all closed to traffic during the operation.  Residents of a number of houses in the area had to leave their homes while the area was examined.

The alert lasted most of the day before the object was taken away and later declared a hoax.

Sinn Fein MP Conor Murphy said the alert had caused a ‘major inconvenience’ for local people and in particular, for farmers tending to their livestock, while SDLP MLA, Dominic Bradley, said the incident had led to ‘a lot of disruption’ for people.
