New £1million Community Centre to commence in Culloville

January 20, 2014

Culloville Development Association in partnership with Newry and Mourne District Council has been successful in gaining funding for a new Community Centre in Culloville.  The Centre will be situated on the site of the Culloville GAC Car Park at Corismoo Road and is being funded by SOAR through the Northern Ireland Rural Development Programme (The European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development: Europe investing in rural areas and Department of Agriculture and Rural Development) with support from Newry and Mourne District Council.

The Community Centre will be a new ‘state of the art’ modern facility including large multi-functional hall, meeting rooms, gymnasium, office, kitchen, changing rooms, toilet and storage facilities.  It will also include gravel re-surfacing of the car park and erection of new perimeter fencing.

Mayor of Newry and Mourne District Council Cllr M Ruane turned the sod for this project along with Slieve Gullion Area Councillors, members of Culloville Development association and SOAR.

Chairperson of Culloville Development Association, Gerard Callan said that “the commencement of the construction of the Community Centre represents the culmination of a lot of hard work from a committed group of people who were determined to see this project happening.   I would like the thank the four Voluntary groups in the Culloville area who contributed greatly to the project namely Culloville GAC, Culloville Residents’ Association, St Malachy’s Youth Club and Culloville Camogie Club.  We also would like to greatly thank all the funders and Newry and Mourne District Council for their support in getting the project to this stage.  The support of local councillors is also much appreciated by the Development Association.

The people of Culloville are really excited with the construction of the Community Centre and we hope that this investment will give every person in the area the opportunity to avail of the very best in Community facilities into the future”.

Construction work will be carried out by Kelly, McEvoy and Brown Construction, Castlewellan.  The project is due to be complete in October 2014.
