A 31-year-old man has been charged in connection with a serious assault, which resulted in the death of a popular Dundalk publican.

Bartender Lawrence ‘Michael’ McGeown (63) worked in Pa’s bar in the town but was socializing in Fagan’s pub on the Castletown Road when he was assaulted on Friday night, 28th February.  It is alleged he was approached by a man inside the bar who punched him to the ground in an unprovoked attack.

Mr McGeown was taken to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda following the incident, and later released.  However his condition worsened and he was returned to hospital on Monday after his daughter discovered him unconscious in his Toberona home.

He remained in a critical condition and succumbed to his injuries on Thursday. Investigating Gardaí are appealing to anyone who was in the Castletown Road area between 8.30pm and midnight on Friday, 28 February, or who may have information to contact Dundalk Garda Station on (042) 9335577.
