Forkhill illegal abattoir animal did not enter food chain

April 14, 2014

Investigations into an illegal abattoir discovered in Forkhill in early March are still ongoing but, The Examiner understands, there is no evidence to suggest that an animal recently slaughtered at the illegal site had entered the food chain.

According to a report by Eoin Devlin, Assistant Director of Environmental Health, details were limited as investigations continue but DARD are continuing to investigate a number of issues relating to the identification and registration of animals, with a number of live cattle seized along with meat from the slaughtered animal which belonged to the farmer in question.

It also confirmed that a subsequent raid on a butcher’s premises showed no evidence of illegal meat being sold.
