Seven year jail term for convicted rapist

April 21, 2014

A 23-year-old Crossmaglen man has been sentenced to seven years in jail for the rape of a woman in Newry more than two years ago.

Padraig O’Callaghan from Monog Road pleaded guilty to sexually assaulting the 23-year-old victim on December 11th 2011.

A previous court sitting heard how the woman accepted a lift from two men at Sugar Island in the early hours of the morning.  She was driven around the town for almost an hour during which time she was raped.  Her mobile phone and purse were stolen before she was dumped at the roadside in the North Street area.

O’Callaghan initially denied any involvement but later changed his plea to guilty.

Following the sentencing, DC Haughey, Rape Crime Unit, said: “This was a traumatic and vindictive attack where the victim was ridiculed and intimidated. We are pleased to see the sentence handed down and hope this sends a clear message to all offenders. Sexual offending is unacceptable and if you offend, we will bring you before the courts.

“The victim in this case should be recognised for her bravery throughout the investigation.”
