40th Anniversary of Crossmaglen Fire Station

April 28, 2014

A special event to mark the 40th anniversary of the opening of a Fire Station in Crossmaglen, and to honour those whose hard work and dedication saw it happen, took place last Saturday in the town.

The Public Open Day at Crossmaglen Fire Station provided an opportunity for the public to find out about the work that retained firefighters carry out to protect the community and recognised those who campaigned tirelessly for almost 20 years to have the station established in the town.

Addressing a crowd which included both SDLP and Sinn Fein representatives, founder member of the Crossmaglen Fire Brigade, Eugene Donaghy, gave a detailed account of the struggle to secure a retained fire service for Crossmaglen.  The Chief Fire Officer in attendance praised the work of the community throughout the campaign and congratulated all involved, paying particular tribute to Mr Donaghy, who spearheaded the 20 year campaign.

Special presentations were made to all who had served in the fire brigade before retained status was granted.

An historical tour of the Fire Station also took place with displays of Firefighter skills using the latest fire and rescue equipment, before the day finished off with an evening buffet for all present.
