Thieves steal lead flashing from roof of Bessbrook Community Centre

May 12, 2014

SDLP representatives in the Bessbrook area have hit out at those who stole lead from the roof of the village community centre, causing extensive damage in the process.

SDLP councillor John Feehan condemned those responsible, calling it “a blatant attack on the community”.

“This community centre is widely used by the local community and this attack, removing the lead flashing from the roof, has impacted hugely on the users of this valuable facility.  It is not the first time the Centre has been attacked and in recent times shutters and screens have had to be provided on the windows because they were constantly being broken.  Emergency repairs have now to be carried out to make it weatherproof and prevent further damage,” Councillor Feehan said.

“It took many years of campaigning and fundraising by the local community to get this much needed facility and any attack on the centre is a blatant attack on the community.”

Voicing her condemnation of the incident, the SDLP’s candidate in the upcoming Council election, Kate Loughran said: “The local community is outraged at this attack and see it as an attack on them.  This is a strong and resilient community and they want to see permanent repairs carried out as soon as possible.

“I would appeal to those responsible to seriously consider the implications of their acts of wanton vandalism.  If anyone has any information on those responsible I would urge them to bring it to the appropriate authority,” she added.
