Investigation into ambulance hit-and-run

May 26, 2014

Investigations by the police and Northern Ireland Ambulance Service (NIAS) are continuing into the circumstances surrounding a hit-and-run crash involving an ambulance transporting a patient to Daisy Hill hospital on Tuesday last.

The incident occurred around 2.20pm on the Sturgan Road at Camlough Lake when a car being driven at speed, crashed into the ambulance before it sped off from the scene without stopping.

Significant damage was caused to the ambulance although crew members and a patient who had been involved in an earlier accident, were not seriously injured.

The ambulance had been in attendance at an earlier two-car collision in which five people were involved.  None of the five are believed to have sustained serious injuries.

A spokesman for the ambulance service said additional emergency vehicles were sent to the scene to transport the patient and ambulance crew to hospital where they were assessed before being discharged.

The NIAS appealed for anyone who witnessed the incident to contact PSNI with any information they have.
