Book Launch in Newry Library

Libraries Ni hosted a very successful event in the local branch at Hill St, Newry to mark the Public Launch of the book,”Newry, Water, Ships and Town. The book was written by a mix of local people and historians, edited by Anthony Russell, and is a cameo of a bygone era when Newry had commercial port status.

This book launch was the third phase of the “Newry Docker” project which was the result of a partnership between Newry Maritime Association and Drumalane/Quayside CA.The large audience were reminded that the “Docker sculpture was unveiled on 26th April followed by an ebook launch for local schools on 2nd June.The project attracted funding of £52,000 from DSD through Neighbourhood Renewal and the scheme was then managed by Newry and Mourne District Council.

Newry and Mourne District Council were represented by the Mayor, Councillor Daire Hughes and Mr Jerome Burns, Assistant Director of the Regional Office DSD, represented the funders.  Gerry Coyle,himself a third generation docker, represented the Drumalane /Quayside CA.    James Mc Arevey,Newry Maritime Association PRO hosted the proceedings.  Copies of the book were distributed to everyone who attended and they had an opportunity to view an extensive Maritime exhibition specially created for the occasion by Newry Maritime Association.
