Belleek’s assault: Man charged with woman’s attempted murder

A 44-year-old man is to appear before Newry Magistrates’ Court today (Monday) charged with attempted murder following a serious assault on a woman in Belleeks at the weekend.

The accused is further charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm, threats to kill, possession of an offensive weapon with intent to commit an indictable offence, common assault and attempt to commit grievous bodily harm.

A second man, aged 43, is charged with aiding and abetting assault, occasioning actual bodily harm and common assault.

The charges arise from an incident in the early hours of Saturday morning at the victim’s home on the Newry Road, close to the village of Belleeks.

It was reported to police around 6.20am that a 33-year-old woman had been attacked by two men.  It is understood she was severely beaten.

The victim was subsequently taken to hospital where she received treatment for her injuries, which at this stage are not thought to be life-threatening.

Police arrested the two men at the scene.

The 44-year-old will appear for a first remand hearing on the attempted murder charge today (Monday) at Newry Magistrates’ Court, while his accomplice is expected to appear before the same court on Wednesday 20th August on charges of aiding and abetting assault.

Police enquiries into the incident are continuing.
