ROGHA launch LUNASA Festival of Craft in South Armagh

July 28, 2014

The festival is organised by ROGHA  (Ring of Gullion Handcrafts and Art).  The members of ROGHA met in January to form a collective and are now putting on a fun filled Festival of Craft as part of August Craft Month, the annual celebration of craft co-ordinated by Craft NI.

All events will take place in Ti Chulainn Cultural Activity Centre, Mullaghbawn.

ROGHA is made up of a diverse group of ceramicists, textile artists, glassmakers, jewellers living in the Ring of Gullion/South Armagh area.

Mary Cowan, a ceramic artist and member of the group said: “We were set up for a variety of reasons. There are a lot of us living in the area but we are all fairly isolated. We thought it would be a good idea to meet up, have exhibitions and have a space to sell our work. We are also interested in education, developing the industry and bringing craft to the local community.

LUNASA Exhibition 1st – 31st August

The exhibition is launched on Friday August 1 at 7.30pm and features the work of painters, ceramicists, textile artists, wood-turners and glass artists.

Day of Art and Craft for all the Family Sunday 3rd August.

The festival also includes an Open Day on  Sunday August 3 featuring demonstrations of wood turning, pottery, glass making, painting,  wet and dry felt making and other textile and mixed media.  There will be lots of free craft activities for adults and children. This is a great chance for the community to have fun, explore their inner artist and see and experience how art and craft is created.  Free event all welcome.

Mary added: “It is a good mix. Bridge Street Studios is a long established Studio Space but some people have converted their garages or rooms in their homes into workshops. It is a chance for the public to see how different artists work.”
