September 1, 2014

SDLP MLA for Newry and Armagh Dominic Bradley has expressed his deep sadness at the death of Mr Pat McGeeney, a former member of the SDLP Slieve Gullion branch.

Commenting, Mr Bradley said:

“I am very saddened to hear of the passing of SDLP Slieve Gullion branch member Pat McGeeney. Pat was a stalwart supporter of the SDLP in south Armagh since its foundation and he was closely associated with the late Paddy O’Hanlon and with former SDLP MP Seamus Mallon.

“From the outset Pat had a deep belief that peaceful and democratic means were the only way forward for the people of Ireland. He worked assiduously throughout his life to achieve that goal. Pat’s political dream was realised when the Good Friday Agreement was signed guaranteeing the supremacy of peace over violence and enshrining the rights and identities of all the people of the North.

“Pat McGeeney stood up for his beliefs when subjected to extreme intimidation but he never baulked from promoting the ideas of the SDLP.”

Former deputy First Minister Seamus Mallon also expressed his condolences to Mr McGeeney’s wife and family.

He said:

“Pat McGeeney was a man for whom I had the highest respect and regard. He was a solid supporter of the SDLP throughout all the years he was involved with the party. Pat earned the respect of the people of his own area and of the wider south Armagh community through his courage and conviction that peaceful and democratic processes and policies were the only real choice for this country.

“He was a genial individual who was loved and respected by all who came into contact with him. He stood his ground and he stood it firmly in the face of opposition which would have beaten others.

“Pat will forever have a place in the hearts of members and supporters of the SDLP in Newry and Armagh.”

Councillor Geraldine Donnelly endorsed the sentiments of her collogues and said how delighted and proud she was to have known and worked with Pat over the years. Geraldine extended her sympathies to his wife, Catherine, son Michael, daughters Anne, Cathy and Mary and his sister Mary.
