Camlough man Derek McCabe, dubbed a “dreamer” by his friends and family for his obsession with scratch cards and lottery, saw his dreams come true last Saturday when he scooped a massive €91,000 on the hit RTE game show, Winning Streak.

Derek stole the show with his wisecracks and laid back style and admitted to host Marty Whelan that he was well known in his local area for buying scratch cards and lottery tickets and was jokingly teased for being “a bit of a dreamer.”

“Who’s laughing now?” joked the Camlough man as he embarked on the first round of the money spinning game show.

The banter continued as he told Marty Whelan he would put all his winnings “on a horse” before revealing that wife Siobhan, “had the money spent already!”

His delighted family, including his wife, sons Aidan and Kevin and daughter, Jodie – who is on a visit home from Australia, nervously watched as cool contestant Derek swept the board in the first round winning the maximum cash amount of €50,000 and a holiday to Rome worth €3,000!

The team game ‘Higher or Lower’ yielded him another €14,000 before he swept the board once again to win another €2,000 and the chance to spin the wheel – prompting Marty Whelan to joke that the evening had turned into “The Derek Show.”

Spinning the wheel with great gusto, Derek managed to scoop another €22,000 bringing his total winnings to a massive €91,000.

Spirits are sure to be high among the McCabe family as they jetted off to Ibiza on Sunday for a family wedding, making it a double celebration for the triumphant Camlough man.
