Heritage Collection Open Day – in Newry City Library

September 8, 2014

Newry City Library will host a Heritage Collection Open Day on Thursday 11th September from 10:00am – 4:00pm. Experienced library staff will be offering a guiding hand to highlight the reference material available, including resources on Irish history and local studies. Also of interest are two special collections: the Crossle papers and the Newry printed 18th and 19th century books.

During the day two guided tours of the collection will take place at 11:00am and 2:00pm for which booking is essential.

The Crossle Papers detail background and genealogical information on prominent families in the Newry area.  The information is handwritten and accumulated in notebooks and scrapbooks from the early 1900s.    This is supplemented by correspondence with members of various local families and a small number of documents.  The notebooks also contain information on the social and local history of the Newry area.

Visitors will have the opportunity to learn how to access and use ancestry resources; search UK and US censuses, immigration records, shipping lists, military records, photographs and maps.  Admission is free.

For more information and to make a booking contact Newry City Library, 79 Hill Street, BT34 1DG or t: 028 3026 4683 or e: newrycity.library@librariesni.org.uk
