Meigh Community Association hosts Halloween extravaganza

October 27, 2014

The Meigh community will enjoy a packed programme of events for Halloween for the first time ever in the village.  Organised by the village Community Association, the events are being made possible as a result of funding provided by the Newry and Mourne Police and Community Safety Partnership (PCSP).

Sinn Fein councillor Liz Kimmins welcomed the news: “This programme aims to provide the Meigh community with a more positive experience of Halloween, which will be enjoyed by everyone. I would therefore like to congratulate the community association on their efforts in organising and delivering a fantastic programme for their community and wish them well over the coming weeks.”

Chairperson of Meigh Community Association, Oliver Quinn, spoke about the hard work carried out by the association in meeting with a number of agencies including the Confederation of Community Groups and the Policing and Community Safety Partnership.

“We want to bring the community together and ensure Halloween is an enjoyable experience for everyone and we would encourage everyone from the community to take part in the activities provided,” he said.

The programme also aims to address issues such as firework safety and anti-social behaviour, which can be particularly prevalent during the Halloween period, and this will be carried out through a number of workshops with the emergency services.

Councillor Kimmins praised the community association’s initiative to raise awareness of the dangers of fireworks, and the effects of anti-social behaviour within their community.

“Halloween can often be a frightening time for many people, in particular the elderly and it is therefore important for children, young people and the wider community to understand Programme of events:

Friday 31st October – Arts and Crafts Workshop in the Community Centre, mask making, etc
