The People’s Millions – Votes sought for Newry project

November 24, 2014

A project aimed at offering a year-round programme of arts and drama events exclusively for older people in Newry will feature on UTV Live at Six tomorrow evening (Tuesday) in a bid to secure a slice of Lottery funding.

The Imagine Arts Centre (Kaleidoscope) will go head-to-head with an Antrim-based project to win the public vote and secure funding of up to £50,000 to help establish a dedicated arts centre for older people.

The centre would build upon the success of Kaleidoscope’s Acting Up project which began in 2012 and now has over 120 members, with an average age of 71.

Having won a place in the finals of The People’s Millions lottery fund competition, the first ever Newry-based group to do so, members are appealing to everyone throughout the area to vote for their project and help them win.

The result of the competition will depend solely on the amount of public votes received by each project so ensuring the local community votes in their favour is vital to see this unique vision become a reality.

Votes can be cast by text or phone, although the number will not be made available to the public until Tuesday morning.  Voting lines will be open from 9am until midnight on Tuesday 25th November only.  No votes will be accepted after this time.  Each call or text costs 15p whether it is on a mobile or landline and you can vote up to a maximum of 10 times.

As part of their campaign to win, the group has set up a website detailing information on the project and how you can vote for it – visit
