Man remanded over serious New Year’s Day assault

A 21-year-old man has been remanded in custody following a serious assault in Newry in the early hours of New Year’s Day, in which the victim, a 28-year-old man, sustained severe injuries.

Police received a report around 2.30am of an altercation between a number of men in the Canal Street area.  As a result of the brawl, a 28-year-old man sustained serious injuries including a broken nose, fractures to his eye socket and jaw and bruising to his face and body.

Police investigating the incident arrested the 21-year-old in Newry on Thursday evening.  He appeared before Newry Magistrates Court on Friday charged with causing grievous bodily harm with intent and was remanded in custody.

Witnesses to the assault are being sought, and police ask anyone with information to contact CID at Ardmore police station on the non-emergency number 100 or anonymously through the independent charity Crimstoppers on 0800 555 111.
