Exciting Programme for Brigid of Faughart Festival

January 19, 2015

The launch of the 8th Brigid of Faughart Festival, by Councillor Marianne Butler of Louth County Council, took place in the County Library, Dundalk on Tuesday 13th January.

The festival celebrates Brigid of Faughart as Christian Saint and Pre-Christian Goddess and the ancient festival of Imbolc, the start of Spring in the Celtic year.  The Festival runs from Wednesday 28th January to Sunday 1st February with events in Dundalk, Faughart and Ravensdale.

Stories and memories of how St. Brigid’s Day was celebrated locally were shared at the launch evening by many of the guests.

The theme of 2015 Festival is ‘Embracing Brigid’s Wisdom for a New Way’

Events include:

• Workshops in Cross weaving and Crios making for adults and children.

• Workshops in Circle Dance, Music and Creativity and ‘Be the Change’

• Talks on the different aspects of Brigid by authors Dolores Whelan and Anthony Murphy.

• A  Day of Healing

• Special Eucharist at Faughart on St.Brigid’s Day with Fr. Tom Hamill and Noirín Ní Ríain.

• The Pilgrimage Walk from Fatima Church, Dundalk to Faughart Shrine.

In recent years there is a growth in interest in Brigid both nationally and internationally. This was reflected in the success of the new Brigid’s Way Pilgrimage (www.brigidsway.ie) in July 2014.

The highlight of St. Brigid’s Eve will be ‘Weaving Brigid’s Magic – An Evening of Music, Story, Song and Poetry” which will take place in Dundalk Gaol, with Zoë Conway and John McIntyre, Tony Cuckson, Seán Bradley, Bernadette Smyth, Janice McCloskey and Bee Smith.

While many of the events are free of charge, all donations to the festival are appreciated to cover running costs. We invite you to come and celebrate Brigid’s return at the beginning of Spring!

The festival organisers gratefully acknowledge the support of Louth Local County Council through their Festival & Events Assistance Scheme.
