Farmer’s anger at gate theft and arson attack

February 23, 2015

A Crossmaglen farmer says he has been left severely inconvenienced and out of pocket after thieves stole a farm gate from his field on the Lower Lurgancullenboy Road.

The theft happened in the early morning of Monday last and, the farmer believes, the same culprits returned early the next day and set fire to a large bale of hay on the land, causing an extensive blaze which continued to burn right through to Wednesday morning.

The local man told The Examiner that both his cattle escaped once the gate was removed and were only recovered after an extensive search of the area.

The farmer says he has reported the theft and subsequent arson attack to local police and has passed on his suspicions that those responsible are from the neighbouring area.

He claims there have been similar incidents in the area and that he believes he knows the identities  of those responsible for the offences.

Police have confirmed they are following a number of leads and have appealed to anyone with information on either incident to contact them.
