Teacher jailed for abuse images

March 24, 2009

A teacher who was once employed at a Newry grammar school has been given a two-year jail term for downloading thousands of images of children being abused.

Steven Vincent Colton, 53, was employed as a teacher of history and politics at Our Lady’s Grammar School in 2001, while one of the school’s permanent teachers was on maternity leave.

Last month he pleaded guilty to making indecent photographs of children between March 2004 and January 2008.  The case involved 67,000 still images and 180 hours of video, many of which were in the most serious category possible.

The police had been alerted when Colton used his credit card to access sites containing child pornography.  Handing down the sentence, the judge described his actions as “virtually unspeakable.”
