Save Our Swim Schools public meeting

June 22, 2015

A public meeting to discuss the ongoing concerns surrounding swimming lessons at Newry Leisure Centre is set to take place this Thursday 25th June at 8pm in the Sean Hollywood Arts Centre in Newry.

The meeting has been organised by the Save Our Swim Schools campaign group who have  stepped up their campaign to have private swim schools Swimfit and Elsol reinstated at NLC after their licenses were revoked in February this year, resulting in the loss of 25 staff and a waiting list of 600 children for Council-run lessons at the new pool.

The group wrote to local media in recent weeks claiming that the new programme of swimming lessons and the council swimming teachers structure would “never meet the demand” for lessons. They also wrote to all councillors calling for a public meeting to discuss the issues that have dogged the new leisure centre since it opened in April.

Last weekend councillors received an invite from Save Our Schools to attend the upcoming public meeting.

According to a spokesperson from the swimming lessons campaign group, its members will be making a presentation to councillors who attend Thursday’s meeting asking them to rethink or overturn the decision to oust the swim schools.

Inviting all interested parties to come along to the public meeting the spokesperson added,

“We need as much local support from parents and kids and local media as we can, so please come along to air your views and lend support to the campaign.”

The public meeting takes place on Thursday 25th June, 8pm in the Sean Hollywood Arts Centre.
