Heart Hero award for Newry/Armagh MP

June 22, 2015

The MP for Newry and Armagh, Mickey Brady, has been recognized for his work in improving the health of local people affected by heart disease.

Former MLA, Mr Brady was one of two Assembly members to be jointly awarded the British Heart Foundation (BHF) Influencing Heart Hero Award.  The other joint winner is DUP MLA Paula Bradley.

The pair scooped the accolade at the charity’s annual Supporter Conference held in Antrim recently in recognition of their dedication to fighting heart disease and for their support to the BHF locally.  For over three years, they championed issues of importance through the All Party Group on Heart Disease and Stroke at the Assembly.  Due to their leadership and support they have played a key influencing role in improving services for people living with heart disease in Northern Ireland.

They have also helped the charity successfully campaign on standardised packs and they continue to fight to ensure local people keep their hearts healthy.  Their commitment has been instrumental in helping to influence and deliver real change in the North.

Mr Brady said he is “thrilled” to receive the award: “It is a great feeling to know that I have been able to make a difference and that my voice has been heard. The charity’s work is very important to me because like me, they believe in improving services for people with heart disease in the six counties and they have been a great support to me throughout the years. I want to continue working with the BHF locally to help stop lives being cut short from heart disease and support and improve the lives of those living with heart conditions.”

Jayne Murray, Public Affairs & Communications Manager, at BHF Northern Ireland said Mr Brady’s “hard work and determination in supporting people living with cardiovascular disease is inspiring and reflects the values that we hold at the core of the charity. We rely on the support of local politicians like Mickey to help us in our fight for every heartbeat.”
