Funeral for tragic boating victim

February 1, 2016

The body of Silverbridge man, Niall Quinn, was returned to his heartbroken family on Saturday evening, exactly a week after he died in a tragic boating accident in Australia.

The narrow road leading to the family home on Bond’s Road in the village was thronged with mourners as hundreds joined with Niall’s family and friends to receive his remains and pay their respects to the much-loved young man.

Niall G, as he was affectionately known, was socializing with friends on a houseboat moored on the Murray River, near the border between New South Wales and Victoria, when he fell from the vessel.  It’s believed he hit his head as he fell and, despite frantic attempts by his friends to rescue him, drowned in the river.

Requiem Mass for the 27-year-old carpenter is set to take place today (Monday) in St. Brigid’s Church, Glassdrummond, with burial following in the adjoining cemetery.

Left to mourn his passing are his parents Anthony and Deirdre, sister Antoinette, brothers Gary and Aodhán, grandmothers and wider family circle, to whom deepest sympathy is extended.
