Oz fundraiser in memory of Niall Quinn

February 22, 2016

A special fundraising night in memory of Silverbridge man Niall Quinn is set to take place this Friday in Melbourne, Australia, where Niall had been living when he was tragically killed in a boating accident last month.  Organised by some of his many friends in Australia, the event will feature raffles and auctions with all proceeds donated to The Kevin Bell Repatriation Trust and the Echuca Search and Rescue organisation in Australia.

Niall G, as he was affectionately known, was socializing with friends on a houseboat moored on the Murray River, near the border between New South Wales and Victoria on 25th January when he fell from the vessel.  It’s believed he hit his head as he fell and, despite frantic attempts by his friends to rescue him, he drowned in the river.

Remembered by his friends as the “life and soul of any party”, his loss has left a huge void in the lives of his family and his huge network of friends in Australia.  Paying tribute to Niall on the fundraiser’s Facebook page, close friend Elaine Boyle, who helped to organise the memorial charity event, said,

“Our friends are like our family here in Australia and two weeks ago our St Kilda family lost one of our own. We are all devastated about Niall and it definitely has been like there has been a hole in all of our hearts over the last few weeks.

“Niall was one of the good ones who definitely would have put a smile on your face, sang you a song, told you a joke or added some happiness to your life in some way at one time or another. So there is no better way to honour Niall than to raise some money for two great causes – The Kevin Bell Repatriation Trust, who have been a huge assistance to Niall’s family at this difficult time, and the Echuca Search and Rescue and for us to remember Niall by having a night that he would have loved.”

The event has been warmly welcomed by Niall’s friends and family and promises to be an emotional night of remembrance of the hugely popular character and a chance to give back to two organisations which provided invaluable assistance to Niall’s friends and family in the aftermath of his tragic death.
