Intrepid cyclist completes Grand Fondo on milestone birthday

June 13, 2016

A Crossmaglen businessman marked his 70th birthday in style by successfully completing the challenging Grand Fondo Giro d’Italia cycle on Sunday last.

While many would celebrate a milestone birthday with a holiday or meal out with friends, John O’Neill from Creggan competed with sportsmen half his age, covering the grueling 170km route on one of the hottest days of the summer with temperatures surpassing 24C.

The route took participants from Belfast through the Mournes Mountains where they tackled some tough climbs including the pinnacle of the cycle at Spelga Dam, an elevation of some 8,000ft.  Undaunted by such a challenge, John kept pace with the pack and finished the course in record time.

A keen amateur cyclist for more than 30 years, in that time John has covered more than 100,000 miles on his bike and his family and friends take this opportunity to congratulate him on this latest achievement while looking forward to many more.  Well done, John!
