Call for Executive to commit funding to Killeavy Castle redevelopment

July 4, 2016

SDLP MLA Justin McNulty has called on Economy Minister, Simon Hamilton and the Minister for Infrastructure Chris Hazzard to provide the additional financial resources required to being the proposed Killeavy Castle development to fruition.

Mr McNulty said the redevelopment of Killeavy / Bell’s Castle has a huge tourism potential for the wider South Armagh area and the project cannot be allowed “to slip though our fingers”.

“The developer has ambitious plans for the site and my colleagues Geraldine Donnelly and Dominic Bradley have been instrumental in bringing the project to this point,” Mr McNulty revealed.

“Meetings were held with Invest Northern Ireland and both Alex Attwood and Mark H Durkan as the then Environment Ministers in a bid to get the necessary planning approvals over the line.  We also held round table meetings with Ministers, the Chief Executive and senior officers at Newry Mourne and Down District Council and the Department of the Environment to discuss funding and partnership opportunities with the Council.”

Mr McNulty welcomed the commitment by Newry, Mourne and Down District Council to provide £260,000 to the overall project and added: “We need to see the Infrastructure Minister and the Economy Minister and their senior officials to step up their engagement with the project promoter and fill the funding gap to make the project a reality as soon as possible.  This project is just what south Armagh needs, it will bring investment, jobs and tourists and I look forward to its completion.”
