Merchant’s Quay development to open in the new year

November 7, 2016

A significant commercial development under construction on the site of the former Newry Tax Office is expected to open early next year, The Examiner has learned.

It is understood the development, which will be known as Custom House, will comprise of a Dental Clinic as well as retail, office and restaurant units, helping to breathe life back into the somewhat neglected part of the Merchant’s Quay area of the city.

Downshire Quay LLP are responsible for the development of the site, with work under way there over the last few months. The project represents a £2 million investment, the first such investment in City Centre Development in over a decade.

Commenting on the scheme, Daragh Mallon, Chartered Valuation Surveyor with Best Property Services Commercial Department said,

“This is a significant investment in the City centre in excess of £2 million and will enhance the City’s retail provision and enliven the upper Merchant’s Quay area.

“The scheme will be anchored by South Down Dental Clinic who will occupy the first floor with complementary medical and facial aesthetics treatments. The ground floor is available to lease and will comprise of 5 retail/office/restaurant units (ranging from 1,000 – 6,000 sq ft) with modern ceiling to floor glazing creating a really contemporary look to the whole building in keeping with the recently completed Public Realm scheme along the quayside.”

The Custom project is expected to complete in early 2017.
