Castleblayney teenager seriously injured in violent attack in Maynooth

November 28, 2016

Gardaí are appealing to anyone with information about a shocking attack on a Castleblayney teenager last weekend to come forward.

Eighteen year old Kym Owens was seriously assaulted in Maynooth on Sunday evening (20th November).   The first year arts student was returning to her digs in the university town and had just got off a bus when she was violently attacked at the Moyglare Abbey Estate. She sustained serious head injuries after being brutally beaten just 500 metres from her digs.  Kym remains in a stable but serious condition in Blanchardstown Hospital in Dublin.

Gardai believe she may have been attacked by someone who had been on the bus with her and they have renewed their appeal for any person who was on the A2B bus service, which travelled from Monaghan Town to Maynooth on Sunday evening to contact them.

The bus service arrived in Castleblayney at 6.15pm where the 18 year old  student got on. It then travelled onto Ardee and arrived in Maynooth at about 8.15pm with the assault taking place just minutes later.

At time of the attack Kym was wearing a long dark green coat with a hood, black jeans, a red hoodie and white converse runners and she was carrying a green sports bag with ‘Castleblaney Faughs’ on the side.

Superintendent Gerry Wall from Leixlip garda station said it was not clear if the teenage victim had been robbed.

Gardaí are appealing for witnesses and anyone with information – particularly anyone who was on the bus, those who were in the vicinity of Maynooth Village/Moyglare Abbey Estate between 7.30pm and 9.15pm on Sunday night, and anybody who noticed anything unusual – to contact them.

They can call Leixlip garda station on 01-666-7800, the Garda Confidential Line at 1800-666-111 or any garda station.
