Planning approval granted for £40m Bessbrook development

December 5, 2016

The village of Bessbrook is set to receive a major new housing development after approval was granted by Newry, Mourne and Down District Council for the construction of 246 new houses at McKnight’s Hill.

The application for lands at McKnight’s Hill was submitted by Lotus Homes (UK) Ltd in April of this year, proposing a residential development to include 246 new dwellings which include 166 semi-detached and 80 detached houses with associated garages and private driveways.  The formation of a new right-hand turn lane, site access from McKnight’s Hill, provision of a children’s play area, and associated site works were also included in the planning application, which was granted approval at the Council’s Planning Committee meeting on 23rd November. It is understood there was previous approval for over 300 units on the site and that the reduction in units paved the way for the passing of the new application without discussion.

Work on the project, which is estimated will cost up to £40m, is expected to begin in the first quarter of 2017, with work having already commenced on eight houses on McKnight’s Hill for which planning permission has already been received, as part of the overall scheme.

Lotus homes have confirmed that, once started, the development will be built to sales to meet the current demand for housing in the area.
