Massive haul of contraband cigarettes seized in Louth in 2016

January 2, 2017

Customs officers seized more than 124,500 cigarettes and 12.9kg (28lb) of tobacco in county Louth during 2016, according to figures released by the Revenue service.

It is understood investigators launched a series of operations to disrupt the black market in the county, with at least a dozen brands discovered in various seizures.

The contraband cigarettes and tobacco were worth more than 74,000 euro (£63,000) if sold in shops – representing a potential loss of almost 60,000 euro (£51,000) to the Exchequer.

7,470 euro (£6,360) in cash and a car were also seized by customs officers during the same period.

Several people have been questioned in relation to the contraband cigarettes and tobacco and files are being prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions.
